I'm Jean Carrière. I work at the join between a building model and its consequences: carbon, energy, and cost. I'm rebuilding that process on open tools, writing as I go.

At the join of model and measurement

Fifteen years in building energy modeling and BIM/openBIM: IFC, IDS, and the integration work that connects a building model to its carbon, energy, and cost consequences.

The niche is deliberate: most LCA practices treat the model as an inconvenience; most BIM practices stop before the carbon math. I sit exactly at the join.

Right now I'm rebuilding my toolchain on open software (IFC, Blender Bonsai, EnergyPlus) and writing about it as it develops.

02How I work

Three rules I don't break

Rule 01

Audit before analysis

No analysis runs on an unaudited model. What a model can and can't support gets measured, not assumed, and uncertainty language scales with model quality.

Rule 02

No naked numbers

Every result carries its assumptions: boundary, study period, functional unit, data sources. A number without its boundary is meaningless.

Rule 03

Reviewed ≠ calibrated

Language never exceeds its verified basis. Design models are "reviewed"; only measured-data comparison meeting acceptance criteria earns "calibrated".
